Britain is surprised by snow, what do we expect in winter. It was forecast and here it is. Most of us only get a few inches of snow, but it brings chaos, Why? It is because we do not know how to deal with it. We expect to do things in the same way as any other day, but can not due to the snow. We would not dream of getting up earlier to go to work, as it stands to reason that our journey will take longer. This is because, you should, if driving, be driving with regards to the conditions of the road. Reduce speed, anticipate, no sudden movements of braking or acceleration and carry snow shovel, warm clothing, bag of grit, etc
The motto is 'Be prepared'
I started driving when I was 19 and I am now 63 and I have always managed to get home by my car, if I decided to use. If I felt the conditions in the morning  were too bad, I left the car at home and either took public transport or walked.  these occurred in the 70's and 80's, when we had winters. Before I was driving, the 50's and 60's were even worse. Currently I have had no problems.
